CASE STUDY: Developing a Rapid Control Prototyping Platform for Implementing Advanced Engine Control Systems


The Challenge

Developing a rapid prototyping platform to implement a real-time control system for an internal combustion engine that can handle all the tasks commonly managed by a ECU, such as engine position sensing, injection, and ignition actuations and interface with sensors to implement standard control and diagnostic strategies and the development of new advanced control algorithms.

The Solution

Using the NI PXI-R Series multifunction RIO module with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and the NI PXI-8186 embedded controller running the NI LabVIEW Real-Time Module to develop a system that interfaces with engine sensors through several I/O boards to handle time-critical tasks associated with the angular and timing requirements for engine position monitoring and generating precise actuations in terms of injection duration and phase and spark advance (SA) position.
